He was a talented painter and a portraitist. He is best known for representing the English life. William spent his early life in poverty and misery as his father was in jail. Later on he started painting and got fame. In 1742 when his portrait was painted, he served in a hospital board. Later he became advocate for an English school of art, different from the aristocratic and religious of French and Italian schools. Although he started his career as a portrait painter he quickly becomes a specialist in still life and animal painting.
